Taranaki Street History
1957-1976
Below are ‘snapshots’ of happened at ACM in ten-year blocks. These snapshots are taken from ACM’s official records.
1951-1960
ACM focused its attention on three areas: the youth, the regions and the building. The church placed a lot of importance on the Chinese School. These classes were seen as helping the youth maintain their connection to their Chinese heritage.
The Missioner at the time, Rev. John Yan Laap Chung, continued to visit the major centres around the country, Napier, Gisborne, Hamilton, Auckland and Christchurch. Outside of personal visitations the church maintained its connection with these Chinese communities by sending out a parish magazine.
As early as 1951, sketches of a new church and hall had been drawn up, however, it took time to secure a site. It was finally secured in Taranaki Street. A lot of fundraising events were held, mainly by the way of screening Chinese films. Construction began in Taranaki Street in December 1954. Worship services at the site started on 21st July 1956.
ACM’s relationship with the diocese changed significantly when the following happened: 1. ACM elected its first ‘synodsman’ (synod representative) in 1956, Mr. Yen Tong Wu; and 2. ACM was promoted to Pastorate status. Church wardens and vestry members were appointed thanks to the help of Bishop R. H. Owen, Rev. Nigel Williams and Rev. Haskell.
1961-1970
In this decade ACM was focusing on the future, that is its youth, evangelism and the building. The Youth Group had grown up and renamed itself the “Good Samaritan Club.” This reimagining of itself shaped its outreach by doing acts of service for ACM and being involved in welfare activities. It also held Bible Studies and social gatherings, such as a basketball club. This saw its membership grow from 30 to 60 people.
ACM continued its visits to the regions including hosting a Christmas Party in Masterton in 1970 with over 200 locals in attendance. In 1970, A Chinese Drama Club was formed as a means to creatively spread the gospel.
Members of the church were deeply involved in numerous fundraising projects, such as bazaars, to continue to fundraise for the new building in Taranaki Street. Around this time it was envisaged that the church would build a Chinese Centre in order to help the Chinese people feel a sense of belonging and ‘attract people to the faith.’ There were plans to build the Chinese Centre at the Taranaki site, however it was judged too small. In 1970, the search began for a new site.
1971-1980
This was a season of transition and ACM focused on fundraising for a new building in Glenmore Street and transitioning between the Taranaki and Glenmore sites. 3 acres of land was purchased at Glenmore Street in 1973. In 1976, the Taranaki Street site was sold, and Sunday Services and other activities were held at St. Mark’s Church and School until 1978. Major events such as the Orient Evenings (29th May 1971, and 1973) and “Exquisite Chinese Banquets” helped to raise funds for the Glenmore Street building. In June 1976, Bishop Rr. Rev. E. K. Norman lays the foundation stone for the Glenmore Street site. The first worship service commenced on 29th August 1979.
During this season, a number of new clubs were formed: Chinese Painting, English Conversation, Chinese Dancing, Junior Youth Club, Basketball Club and the Sun Gwon Club.
